Stephan Myburgh retires after T20 World Cup upset over South Africa

On Monday, South Africa-born Netherlands batter Stephan Myburgh hung up his boots from international cricket after the Dutch side ended Proteas' T20 World Cup campaign.

On Monday, South Africa-born Netherlands batter Stephan Myburgh hung up his boots from international cricket after the Dutch side ended Proteas’ T20 World Cup campaign. However, the Netherlands side managed to secure direct qualification for the 2024 T20 World Cup after beating South Africa by 13 runs in their final group match.

Meanwhile, the loss of South Africa saw Pakistan’s qualification for the semi-final as they beat Bangladesh and sealed their semi-final berth with a five-wicket win as well. However, Stephan Myburgh scored 37 runs in his final match for the Netherlands at the Adelaide Oval on November 6 also.

“Hanging up the boots… To God be the glory!!! Blessed to have made my first class debut 17 seasons ago and international debut 12 seasons ago,” Stephan Myburgh said in an Instagram post. “Never in my dreams would I have imagined finishing my career at the World Cup with a win against @cricket_south_africa_ my blood will always be green. As much as a sportsman always want to win I had a tear for my beloved country.”

“I am thankful for @kncbcricket and the Netherlands that’s now my home and have too many people to thank for my career. Jesus, @tineke.myburgh, friends and family, sponsors and all the supporters out there I can only say thanks!!! #GodIsGood #Blessed can’t wait to see my girls,” Stephan Myburgh further added.

The 38-year-old Stephan Myburgh played 45 T20Is and 22 ODIs for the Netherlands, scoring 915 T20I runs and 527 ODI runs as well.
