Shubman Gill has received the green light to join the Indian team and is showing positive signs of recovery. Gill, who had been diagnosed with dengue fever just before India’s 2023 World Cup opener against Australia in Chennai, was unable to participate in the match and was also ruled out of the game against Afghanistan in Delhi on Wednesday. Unfortunately, the prospects of his return for India’s third World Cup match against Pakistan in Ahmedabad on October 14 appear dim, and his participation in the fourth match against Bangladesh in Pune on October 19 is highly uncertain.

Gill will soon join the Indian team in Ahmedabad under the care of team doctor Rizwan but will require more time before he can resume physical training or wield a cricket bat, with a potential return date of October 17. His participation in the Bangladesh match, which is a league game and not a must-win scenario, is improbable, given the risks associated with recovering from a severe illness like dengue.

As it currently stands, the most likely comeback date for Gill is the New Zealand match in Dharamsala on October 22. Team captain Rohit Sharma expressed his primary concern for Gill’s health and well-being, emphasizing that his recovery takes precedence over his participation in cricket matches.

In Gill’s absence, Ishan Kishan is expected to open alongside Rohit. Team management and selectors are considering the possibility of bringing in a cover for Gill, with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal as potential options. Kishan, who has experience as an opener, will fill the role until Gill’s return, with no specific discussions necessary for this arrangement, as he is comfortable in that position.
