The Indian Premier League 2021 was postponed indefinitely on May 4 due to the many players and staffers testing positive. Later on, there was an alleged biosecurity bubble breach. Now, many cases of mishandling have come to light from the Board of Control of Cricket in India’s (BCCI) side. According to a report by TOI, players refused to take vaccines before the tournament. Players stated they were scared of the aftereffects vaccines to have– mild fever and body ache. The same report suggests overseas players were happy to get vaccinated, but many Indian players were not.

“The players were simply reluctant about taking the vaccine when they were offered. It was not their fault, it was more about lack of awareness,” a source tracking the developments told TOI.

Some franchises convinced their players to take the jab, and some couldnt. This is what perhaps made the difference.

“The players felt the bubble they were in was secure enough and there was no need to take the vaccine. The franchises too did not push for it. Then things suddenly spiralled out of control,” the source added.

IPL 2021 Biobubble breach

According to a report in TOI, there was a breach in COVID-19 protocols during the second phase of IPL 2021. Delhi and Ahmedabad, which also saw a huge surge in COVID-19 cases as the second wave, were the cities hosting the second leg of IPL 2021 and that also meant there was a lack of alternative training facilities there.

“There is a belief within many BCCI and state officials that the decision to take the second phase to Delhi and Ahmedabad was wrong. There were four teams in each city. Except for the main ground, which is an international-level facility and hosted matches, the alternate facilities meant for practice were open to exposure to Covid-19,” an official source told IANS, as reported by TOI.

Exactly 29 games of IPL 2021 season were played before the tournament was suspended due to a breach in the bio bubble. There were several cases across the Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings camps.
