Shikhar Dhawan surpasses Gautam Gambhir to become player with most 50+ scores in successful IPL run chases

Delhi Capitals (DC) opener Shikhar Dhawan smashed 69 runs off 47 deliveries in an Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 league encounter against Punjab Kings (PBKS). Dhawan’s knock helped the Delhi-based franchise chase down a target of 167 runs without much ado, emerging victorious by a margin of seven wickets. The 35-year-old surpassed Gautam Gambhir following his half-century, as the player with the most 50 + scores in successful run chases in IPL.

Dhawan has now registered a score in excess of 50 runs in a successful run chase in IPL on 19 occasions. He was previously tied with Gambhir on 18 instances, with the retired Team India opener now pushed to the second spot. Former SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) skipper David Warner is placed on the third spot in this list, having recorded the same on 17 occasions. Retired Australian cricketer Shane Watson has registered a score in excess of 50 in 13 successful run chases in IPL. Chris Gayle, Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma are placed on the fifth spot in this list, having recorded the same on 12 occasions.

Mayank Agarwal joins elite list

The game between DC and PBKS further saw Mayank Agarwal who is the temporary skipper of the Punjab based franchise, remain unbeaten on 99 runs. He is the third addition to the list of players who have finished unbeaten on 99 in IPL history. Suresh Raina was the first name to join this list, having recorded the same in a clash against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) in 2013. Chris Gayle was the second addition, after registering an unbeaten 99 against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the 2019 edition.

There are four players who have been dismissed on 99 in the history of the cash-rich league. RCB skipper Virat Kohli was the first cricketer dismissed on 99, in a clash against SRH in 2013. Prithvi Shaw marked the second addition, following his dismissal one short of a ton against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2019. Mumbai Indians (MI) batsman Ishan Khan was dismissed on 99 in a league clash against RCB in the 2020 edition. The same edition saw Gayle walking back after scoring 99 runs in a match against Rajasthan Royals (RR).
