Rohit Sharma averaged over 50 for eight consecutive years and his streak was ended in 2021 when he just played three ODIs and averaged only 30.
Rohit Sharma, along with Virat Kohli, is acknowledged as the greatest white-ball player in the modern era. While Virat Kohli has stunned the world with his consistency and his ability to get big scores while chasing, Rohit Sharma is a beast at the top of the order. In the last decade, ever since he was promoted to open the innings under MS Dhoni’s captaincy, he has become one of the deadliest players at the top.
As an opener, Rohit hit 27 centuries while he hit two in the No.4 position. He also transformed into a six-hitting beast. Especially against Australia, considered to have the best bowling attack in the world, Rohit has hit over 100 sixes combined in all formats. However, recently, a streak was broken in 2021.
For eight consecutive years, Rohit Sharma averaged over 50 in ODIs. This is a feat that even Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar have never achieved in their entire career. That streak, though, unfortunately, ended in 2021. In the three ODIs against England in Pune, Rohit managed 90 runs with a high score of 37. Thus, with India playing no ODIs this year, the streak is over.
When Rohit Sharma was promoted to open the batting in the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, he struck gold. He formed a formidable opening pair with Shikhar Dhawan and the duo became very bowler’s worst nightmare. During the ODI series against Australia, Rohit broke new ground as he blasted his first double century.

In 2014, he created history as he smashed 264 against Sri Lanka in Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Had it not been for a dropped catch on 4, Rohit’s history-making efforts would never have been achieved. The year 2017 continued Rohit’s historic march. He became the first player in the history of ODI cricket to hit three double centuries. The pinnacle of his success continued in 2019. In the ICC Cricket World Cup, Rohit hit five centuries to end with 648 runs in the whole tournament. Here is Rohit’s year-wise breakup from 2013 to 2020.

Rohit Sharma was not just good for India, he was the best opener in the world by a country mile in the last decade. If one looks at the average among world openers with a minimum of 50 matches, Rohit is miles ahead. Only David Warner and Jonny Bairstow come somewhere close to Rohit. But, when it comes to the century tally, he is 10 clear of his partner Shikhar Dhawan who hit 17 centuries. He is the only player who has hit over 200 sixes in that period. This meant that out of 137 matches in that period, he hit a six every game. Here is Rohit Sharma’s numbers as compared with the rest of the world
Player | Matches | Innings | Runs | Average | Strike-rate | Highest score | Fifties | Centuries |
Rohit Sharma | 137 | 135 | 7119 | 59.32 | 92.59 | 264 | 31 | 27 |
Shikhar Dhawan | 133 | 131 | 5739 | 46.28 | 94.65 | 143 | 29 | 17 |
Aaron Finch | 129 | 126 | 5212 | 42.37 | 88.42 | 153* | 29 | 17 |
Quinton de Kock | 118 | 118 | 5051 | 45.09 | 95.23 | 178 | 25 | 15 |
Hashim Amla | 117 | 117 | 4892 | 44.88 | 86.47 | 159 | 20 | 17 |
It is sad that due to 2021 being a World T20 year, the number of ODIs was low. But, in 2022, India would be hoping that Rohit fires on all cylinders, considering that he is now the captain of both ODI and T20I sides.
