Chennai Super Kings were in danger of finishing on an under-par score in the IPL 2021 clash against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Wankhede stadium. Harshal Patel had taken three wickets and Chennai Super Kings were struggling to get momentum. However, in the final over, the game changed totally. Harshal lost his length and got hit for five sixes in one over which included a no-ball. Jadeja went past fifty and 37 runs came in the final over as Chennai Super Kings ended on 191/4.

The 37-run final over carnage by Jadeja equaled the record for the most runs in one over in the IPL. In 2011, Chris Gayle of Royal Challengers Bangalore had blasted 37 runs in one over bowled by Kochi Tuskers pacer Prasanth Parameswaran at the M Chinnaswamy stadium. While that occurred in the third over of the Royal Challengers Bangalore chase, this took place in the last over of the innings.

Blow by blow account

The final over began with Chennai Super Kings on 154/4. The first ball was a slow length ball and Jadeja muscled it to deep midwicket for a six. The second ball was a repeat and Jadeja made no mistake. Things went horribly wrong in the third ball. Harshal missed his yorker and bowled a waist-high full toss. Jadeja belted it for a six.

The left-hander carted the pull shot off the free-hit to deep square leg to bring up a 24-ball fifty. The fourth ball was a sliced drive over extra cover but the fielder dropped the chance. Harshal bowled another full toss and Jadeja mauled it over deep midwicket for the fifth six of the over. Jadeja could have had the sixth six in the over but it landed just in front of the ropes.

Almost similar to Gayle

In that carnage in 2011, Gayle boasted four sixes and three fours off Parameswaran. The first ball was sliced over point for a six. The second delivery was a no-ball and Gayle again carved it over point. The second and third deliveries were boundaries to deep midwicket and extra cover. The fourth ball was hammered over wide long off while the fifth was blasted straight down the ground. The sixth legitimate delivery was edged past the keeper as 37 runs came off the over.

While Yuvraj Singh and Kieron Pollard have hit six sixes in one over, 36 runs is actually not the most number of runs in one over. Scott Styris once hit 38 runs in one over bowled by James Fuller in a 2012 T20 game. In a List A game, Willem Ludick conceded 43 runs in one over during one match between Central Districts and Northern Districts.

The most runs in one over in First Class cricket is believed to be 77 by Bert Vance in 1990 in Wellington.
