Ranji Trophy: One dismal performance that haunts Mumbai at M. Chinnaswamy stadium

The recent bunch of Mumbai’s ‘khadoos’ players under the captaincy of Prithvi Shaw might go on to extend their record at M. Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore during the 2021-22 final but one dismal performance that will be etched in their history came at the same venue. Mumbai were all-out for 44 runs in the first innings of the first semi-final against Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy 2014-15.

Karnataka won the toss and opted to bat. Robin Uthappa (68) and Karun Nair (49 not out) played brilliant knocks to take their state team to a total of 202/10 with fast bowler Shardul Thakur picking up four wickets for Mumbai in the first innings. Mumbai, in response, were bundled out for 44 runs, courtesy of some fine bowling performance from Karnataka pace spearhead R Vinay Kumar who picked up six wickets.

Senior Mumbai batters Shreyas Iyer (15) and Suryakumar Yadav (12) were the only two to score in double figures. Six of the Mumbai batters could not get off the mark in the first innings. Avoiding a follow on, Karnataka went on to score 286 runs in their second innings while Aditya Tare (98) helped Mumbai bounce back with a total of 332 in the second innings. But it was not enough to save them from the blushes and chase down the target as they lost by 112 runs.
