Rain had the last laugh and KKR lost the game by 7 runs (DLS Method)
KKR won the toss and elected to bowl first. PBKS got off to an aggressive start, Prabhsimran Singh and Shikhar Dhawan smashed the ball to all parts. Singh’s 23 runs cameo off 12 balls was followed by an 86 runs partnership followed between Dhawan and Rajapaksa who hammered the KKR bowlers. Sunil Narine was greeted for 14 runs and Shardul Thakur for 13 runs in their respective first overs.
Umesh Yadav managed to break the partnership and but it didn’t help their cause as the batters continued the assault till the end of the innings. Jitesh Sharma (21 off 11) and Sikandar Raza (16 off 13) got some quick runs and didn’t let the run rate come down. Shahrukh Khan and Sam Curran found hit some big blows, taking the score to 191-5 at the end.
KKR didn’t get a very good start losing 3 wickets in the powerplay including their first 2 in a single Arshdeep over when the left-arm quick bowler got rid of the opener Mandeep Singh and number 3 Anukul Roy. Rahmanullah Gurbaz got a good start but was dismissed by Nathan Ellis in the 5th over.
Venkatesh Iyer was the impact player substitute for KKR and scored 34 in 28 balls getting in partnerships with Nitish Rana and Andre Russell. Newly appointed skipper Rana scored 24 in 17 balls adding 46 runs for the 4th wicket. Russell also got some good hits finishing at 35 in just 19 balls hitting 2 sixes and 3 fours. After Russel’s dismissal, it looked tough, Shardul came in and smashed the first ball for a six.
Iyer was dismissed just before the rain interval in the 16th over but Shardul Thakur and Sunil Narine in no time added some valuable runs. The rain got heavier and the umpires got the players off the field. After waiting for around half an hour, it was confirmed that the match could not proceed further and KKR were 7 runs from the DLS par score.
