However, he was selected for Bangladesh A after having a successful 2013–14 domestic season. And, he made his Test debut for Bangladesh on its 2014 tour of the West Indies. The series will be memorable for him as he took a five-wicket haul on debut.

And, in the same year when Zimbabwe toured Bangladesh, he registered the figures of 8/39, the best figures by any Bangladesh player in the longer format. He made his ODI debut later in the same series, and picked up a hat-trick, becoming the first-ever player to do so on debut as well.

When did Taijul Islam make his International debut?

Taijul Islam made his Test debut on 5th September 2014 against West Indies whereas his ODI debut came on 1st December 2014 against Zimbabwe. He made his T20I debut on 13th September 2019 vs Zimbabwe.

Taijul Islam - Domestic career

Taijul Islam has played for Rajshahi Division and North Zone at the domestic level. He played in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) for Duronto Rajshahi, and in the Dhaka Premier Division for Prime Doleshwar SC as well. Meanwhile, he made his first-class debut while playing for Rajshahi Division in the 2010–11 season of the National Cricket League.

He initially played for his hometown, Natore, before shifting his base to the Rajshahi Division league system. He travelled Sri Lanka with the Bangladesh national under-19s in 2009 and there he played three under-19 One Day Internationals and one under-19 Test too as well. However, Taijul Islam made his first-class debut for Rajshahi Division in April 2011 in the 2010–11 season of the National Cricket League.

While playing only three matches, he picked up 14 wickets (including three four-wicket hauls) as well. For the 2011–12 season, Taijul earned a place with Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club in the Dhaka Premier Division. Apart from that, Duronto Rajshahi signed him for the inaugural season of the Bangladesh Premier League, playing three matches, including the semi-final where they lost to the Barisal Burners.

Taijul picked up nine wickets from nine matches in the next season. And, in August 2013 he had played for the under-23 side at the ACC Emerging Teams Cup in Singapore, which was his first match at the list-A level. The Dhaka Premier Division later gained the list-A status in 2013, and Taijul was one of the highest wicket-taker, finishing with 22 wickets from 15 matches as well. He was behind only Farhad Reza for Prime Doleshwar. His spells included the figures of 6/19 against Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club as well.

Taijul also played for Prime Bank Limited in a brief Victory Day Cup series in December 2013. He played seven matches and had also represented Rajshahi Division as well. He tasted a lot of success in the 2013–14 season at the first-class level. In the four-zone Bangladesh Cricket League, he claimed 37 wickets in four matches for North Zone. This included his match figures of 12/122 (7/71 and 5/51) against East Zone, the first ten-wicket haul of his career as well.

He took 11/177 (5/88 and 6/89) against Central Zone whereas, in the tournament's final, against South Zone, he picked up 10/242, which included first-innings figures of 8/86 as well. Meanwhile, he has a good season while playing for Rajshahi Division where he claimed 18 wickets from seven matches, including a ten-wicket haul against Sylhet Division as well.

In October 2018, Taijul Islam became the leading wicket-taker for the Khulna Titans team in the 2018–19 Bangladesh Premier League. He picked up thirteen scalps in twelve matches. In November 2019, he played for the Rajshahi Royals in the 2019–20 Bangladesh Premier League as well.

Taijul Islam - International Career

After Taijul's performances in the 2013–14 domestic season, he was added to the Bangladesh A's 15-member squad for the West Indies series in May 2014. And, he was included in Bangladesh's squad for the two-match Test series, replacing Abdur Razzak later on. On his debut at Kingstown's Arnos Vale Ground (on Saint Vincent), he claimed 5/135 in the West Indies' first innings of 484/7 declared. With this, Taijul Islam became the sixth Bangladeshi bowler to take a fifer on his Test debut.

Taijul was eventually selected for Bangladesh's home series against Zimbabwe, in 2014. In the first Test of the three-match Test series, he took 8/39 (his career-best so far) from 16.5 overs in Zimbabwe's second innings, which helped them to bowl the team out for 114 runs as well. Taijul became the first Bangladeshi bowler to take eight wickets in a Test inning, breaking Shakib Al Hasan's earlier record (7/36 against New Zealand in 2008). Moreover, Taijul was involved in an unbeaten 19-run stand for the eighth wicket, scoring the winning runs as Bangladesh won by three wickets as well.

Making his debut in One Day International against Zimbabwe on 1 December 2014, he finished with the figures of 4/11 from seven overs, including a hat-trick as well. He became the fourth Bangladeshi player to take an ODI hat-trick, after Shahadat Hossain, Abdur Razzak, and Rubel Hossain and the first player to take a hat-trick in ODI debut as well. In the first Test in Khulna, he claimed 6/163 in Pakistan's only innings, the second-best figures by a Bangladeshi bowler against Pakistan (after Shakib Al Hasan's 6/82 in 2011) as well.

He made his T20I debut against Zimbabwe, on 13 September 2019 and picked up a wicket with his first delivery as well.
