Can Ishan Kishan replace Dhawan as the ODI opener? Karthik thinks so.

Dhawan has had his worst year since his debut in 2010 for India. Dhawan failed to reach double figures in three innings during the Bangladesh series. He has been supported up to this point, but with a new selection committee on the way, it wouldn't be a terrible idea to shift away from the southpaw.

Veteran Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik has made a significant remark about Shikhar Dhawan’s future in the national setup in terms of the ODI format. This follows left-hander Ishan Kishan’s record-breaking 210 from 131 deliveries in the third and final ODI against Bangladesh. There have been multiple players competing for a single berth on the national team, and Ishan has been one of them, and this knock has almost guaranteed his status. Due to the high level of competition, certain players may miss out on opportunities to start innings. Dinesh Karthik believes someone will have to miss out on the Sri Lanka series and believes Dhawan may be the one.

Meanwhile, Dhawan has had his worst year since his debut in 2010 for India. Dhawan failed to reach double figures in three innings during the Bangladesh series. He has been supported up to this point, but with a new selection committee on the way, it wouldn’t be a terrible idea to shift away from the southpaw. Gill has been outstanding for India in One-Day Internationals this year, and he should be the best option to replace Dhawan at the top. If the management wants a left-handed alternative at the top, Ishan Kishan is a good option because he has done well in the opportunities he has had. Whoever the management wants at the top must be given enough games before the World Cup.

Kishan is hungry for more: Karthik

“For the Sri Lanka series, where does (Shikhar) Dhawan stand? It is going to be interesting to see how they are going to leave out Ishan Kishan. Shubman Gill has been doing so well. If Rohit Sharma is available, somebody has to miss out. It could well be him (Dhawan). That could be a sad end to a glorious career. But some questions to answer for the new selectors,” Karthik told Cricbuzz. “It’s very nice to see someone coming out and being honest with the fact that, ‘you know what, I could have got a 300 if I had batted, but it didn’t happen. Also shows his hunger. He has been walking that thin line with a few of the keepers being part of it and hence not getting that opportunity. Now, he has pushed that door and said, ‘I am ready. Are you going to look at me?’,” added Karthik.
