Headingley 2017. West Indies were staring down the barrel in the series against England. They had been hammered in the Pink Ball Test earlier. For 17 years, West Indies had been demolished on a regular basis in England. They had a target of 322 in the fourth innings. A total in excess of 300 had not been chased for close to 70 years. They literally clung to hope. Shai Hope that is. The batter had smashed 147 in the first innings and looked at ease in tackling England’s bowlers. Green, overcast, swing and seam, Leeds was in it’s elements in that match. But, Shai Hope created history. He smashed another century and along with Jermaine Blackwood’s help, West Indies chased down 322 in grand style.

17 years of pain had ended. Shai Hope became the first individual in the history of cricket to score a century in both innings in Leeds. It was a steady progression for Shai Hope, who was talked about in high regard in the West Indies domestic circuit. He had averaged 67 in his first year of First-Class cricket in the West Indies. Prior to his knock in Leeds, he had hit a double hundred for Barbados in his home ground of the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown.

In subsequent years, Shai Hope became one of the best players in the West Indies ODI set-up. In 2018 and 2019, he averaged 67 and 61 and smashed seven centuries. Those numbers were not far from Virat Kohli’s golden run in the last couple of years. But, after the knock in Leeds, his Test career stagnated. He has not achieved much success in the longest format ever since those heroics in Leeds. One hopes that Shai Hope gives West Indies cricket a ray of hope in their darkened times as they look to stage a resurgence in world cricket.

Shai Hope International Debut

Shai Hope made his Test debut in 2015 against England in Barbados. In 2016, he had made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in Harare. When West Indies toured New Zealand in 2017, Shai Hope made his Twenty20 International debut in Nelson.

Shai Hope International Cricket

Shai Hope had a poor start to his Test career as he failed to cross fifty in 17 innings. He finally broke the jinx in Barbados when he smashed a magnificent 90 in West Indies’ win. But, in ODIs, he had a stellar beginning. He hammered 101 against Zimbabwe and it laid the foundation for his golden years in 2017 and 2018. For these two years, Shai Hope was the best ODI batter in the world. He showed his class with a brilliant 123* against India in Vizag, a match that was tied. Following his success against India, he hit two consecutive unbeaten centuries against Bangladesh.

During the tri-series involving Ireland and Bangladesh, he hit his highest score of 170 and 109 in two consecutive matches. In the 2019 ICC World Cup, Shai Hope hit three fifties with his highest being 96 in Taunton against Bangladesh. After the end of the World Cup, Hope responded with two more centuries against Afghanistan and India in Lucknow and Chennai. His next two tons came against Sri Lanka in Colombo and North Sound. His consistency in ODIs has seen him maintain an average of 52 in ODIs. But, in Tests, after his brilliance in Leeds, he has struggled in a big way.

Shai Hope IPL

Shai Hope has not been picked in any IPL side in his seven-year playing career. With the IPL 2022 mega-auction nearing, the chances of Shai Hope being picked by a franchise is bleak. He has a poor T20I record and he has been pigeon-holed as an ODI specialist.
