When he steps out to bat, he is intimidating. A massive build, combined with a great height and powerful physique makes Kieron Pollard a force to be reckoned with in world cricket. If one has a cursory glance at his numbers, one might wonder what the fuss is all about. But, deep down and away from the scrutiny of international cricket, one can see how much Kieron Pollard has changed the landscape of cricket.
When one goes back 13 years, during the 2009 Champions League T20, there was a team from Trinidad and Tobago that was making big waves. It was all thanks to Kieron Pollard. His big-hitting in one game against the New South Wales Blues made headlines the world over. An attack consisting of Brett Lee, Moises Henriques, and Steve Smith at that time was potent. Yet, Pollard’s brilliance put everyone in the shade. His 18-ball 54 changed the way how Twenty20s would be played.
Technically, Pollard’s game is simple. Hit straight down the ground or in the arc between midwicket and long-on. In better form, he can even pepper long-off. It is in the IPL that Kieron Pollard has given it his all for Mumbai Indians. In 2010, they have not formed an association with him that has benefited them immensely. In three out of Mumbai Indians’ five title triumphs, he has played a massive role. Pollard’s cameos at the end in 2013, 2015, and 2019 have always hurt Chennai Super Kings. In 2021, his 87 off 34 balls helped Mumbai Indians chase down a total in excess of 200 against MS Dhoni’s team.
As a power-hitter, Kieron Pollard is simply unbelievable. He is one of the few players to hit six sixes in one over in international cricket. In Twenty20 Internationals, he has hit 96 sixes and in ODIs 135. Overall, in Twenty20s, he has hit a staggering 761 sixes, second only to Chris Gayle.
In the Caribbean Premier League, he helped Barbados Tridents reach the zenith of their success. From 2014 to 2016, he was out of the West Indies team and charting a path-breaking course in franchise cricket. But, West Indies needed someone with a vision. Kieron Pollard provided them with that vision. He has not been afraid to speak his heart out. After West Indies lost to Ireland, Pollard openly stated that batting in the West Indies has not improved.
Love him or hate him. But, one cannot deny the fact that Kieron Pollard is one of the best Twenty20 players of all time. He gets under the skin of the opposition, just ask Mitchell Starc, David Warner, and Shane Watson. He bludgeons bowling attacks for fun. His fielding is outstanding. What more can you want when it comes to commitment?
Kieron Pollard made his international debut in 2007 against South Africa in St George’s Cricket Ground in the ICC World Cup match in Granada. His Twenty20 International debut was against Australia in Barbados in 2008.
Kieron Pollard has had limited success in international cricket when it comes to ODIs and T20Is. He has not yet played a Test for the West Indies. In 122 ODIs so far, Pollard has scored 2706 runs with an average of 26.67. But, his strike rate is a mind-boggling 94. In Twenty20 Internationals, Pollard has only six fifties in 96 matches with 75* being his highest. However, he is credited for playing a knock of 38 in the 2012 ICC World T20 that knocked Australia out of the competition.
However, outside of international cricket, Kieron Pollard is a legend in franchise T20 cricket. Apart from the Mumbai Indians, he has played in the Big Bash League, Caribbean Premier League, Bangladesh Premier League, Pakistan Super League, and in the Global T20 League in Canada. He has also played in The 100 format in England. In total, he has played for 27 teams.

Kieron Pollard has enjoyed a 12-year association with the Mumbai Indians after they purchased him for USD 750,000 in 2010. He has played 178 games and scored 3,268 runs at a strike rate of 149.77.
