Ek aur karega? Haan karunga! These five words established the legend of Ishant Sharma during the Perth Test against Australia. At six foot four inches and lean, Ishant Sharma was making Ricky Ponting look like an amateur. Relations between India and Australia had nosedived in the aftermath of the Monkeygate Scandal in Sydney. Ishant had been unlucky to have not gotten many wickets in Sydney. But, in Perth, he had shown a zenith which made former Australia skipper Steve Waugh hail him as the next big thing.
He regularly troubled Ricky Ponting and after he had got him out, the legend of Ishant Sharma grew. In 2008, he partnered with Zaheer Khan to terrorize opponents with the old ball and new ball. An IPL participation was only a matter of time. But, from the highs of Perth, Ishant Sharma reached the bottom depths of his bowling from 2009 till 2013.
Ishant struggled for form, rhythm, and confidence. Whether it was too much exposure on the flat wickets, one could never tell. But, after he had completed 50 Tests, Ishant had the worst average for any pace bowler at that time. But, Lord’s 2014 bought about a change in his fortunes. His 7/74 helped India win at the Home of Cricket for the first time since 1986. His solid performances in New Zealand later that year saw him regain some of his old touch.
In the last couple of years, Ishant has regained his touch and become part of a deadly three-pronged pace attack for India. Partnering with Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and sometimes Mohammed Siraj, Ishant Sharma has played a massive role in India winning in Australia as well as in West Indies and England. A pace bowler lasting 100 Tests has not happened since the days of Kapil Dev in India. But, over the course of time, Ishant has truly become Mr. Reliable in the Indian cricket team.
Ishant Sharma made his international debut in 2007. His Test debut came against Bangladesh in Mirpur while his ODI debut happened against South Africa in Belfast. His T20I debut happened in 2008 against Australia in Melbourne.
Before his exploits in Perth against Australia, Ishant Sharma had impressed with a magnificent spell against Pakistan in Bangalore. He took his maiden five-wicket haul and showed that he belonged at the international level. He impressed on the tour of Australia won his first Man of the Match award in ODIs when he took 4/38 against Australia in Melbourne.
After a magnificent home summer in 2008, Ishant’s form slumped dramatically. In India’s poor overseas cycle of 2011 to 2014, Ishant struggled. However, he picked up two wickets in the penultimate over during the final of the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy that gave India the title in dramatic circumstances.
But, in the 2014 Lord’s Test, Ishant etched his name on the Honour’s Board by taking 7/74. That allowed India to win at Lord’s for the first time in 28 years. Ishant continued to enjoy success in England and New Zealand, taking a five-wicket haul in Edgbaston as well as in the Tests in Wellington against the Kiwis.
With his partnership with Bumrah and Shami, the trio has taken 100 wickets at an average near 20 to devastate opponents overseas. Ishant has had great success in West Indies, England, and New Zealand because of his consistency. When he was struggling for form and confidence, the likes of Courtney Walsh and Jason Gillespie offered advice on his technique. Under Gillespie’s guidance, Ishant regained his touch.
In 2021, Ishant played his 100th Test match during the game against England at the new Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. It was a fitting landmark for someone who has given Indian cricket 13 years of sweat and toil.
Ishant Sharma has been playing the IPL ever since 2008. He has played for Deccan Chargers, Kolkata Knight Riders, Kings XI Punjab, Rising Pune Supergiant, and Delhi Capitals. In 93 matches, he has taken 73 wickets. His best haul was 5/12 which he took in IPL 2011 for Deccan Chargers against the Kochi Tuskers team. His economy rate of over 8 and an average of over 37 have made him a little ineffective in T20 cricket.
