The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) edged past the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the final of the 2012 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on this day (May 27). They recorded a title triumph in the cash-rich league for the first time, registering the win against the defending champions by five wickets. Manvinder Bisla and Jacques Kallis stitched a second-wicket partnership of 136 runs to help the Knight Riders build a solid foundation, having been handed a stern target of 192 runs. The former produced one of his best performances on a night that mattered the most, smashing 89 runs off 48 deliveries.

Bisla smashed the opposition bowlers to all corners of the ground, accumulating eight boundaries and five sixes. The game came down to nine runs off the final over, resulting in an exciting end. Shakib Al Hasan and Manoj Tiwary were the players who ensured that the Knight Riders sailed through to the finish line, with months of tireless efforts and sheer dedication culminating in an excellent finale.

Manoj executed an excellent pull shot for a boundary through square leg off Dwayne Bravo, to help KKR script history. The boys in Purple and Gold joined together in celebration at the Chepauk, with fans and experts joining in to celebrate a glorious triumph.

Narine’s heroics

Sunil Narine was one of the key contributors in this victory by the Knight Riders, having made his debut for KKR in a league match against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) that season. Narine registered a five-wicket haul against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Eden Gardens, with his figures of 5 for 19 in four overs helping the home team restrict the opposition for 134 runs.

The Windies all-rounder further played a key role in helping KKR defend a modest total of 140 runs against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians, finishing with four wickets for 15 runs in 3.1 overs. Narine accounted for the prized scalp of Sunil Tendulkar, helping the Knight Riders bundle out the opposition for 108 runs.

The clinical performance helped KKR seal their place in the playoff of the high voltage tournament.

Yusuf Pathan was another vital contributor, having struggled in the initial games of the season. Pathan smashed 40 runs off 21 deliveries on a tricky wicket against Delhi Capitals in the Qualifier 1, held at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.

KKR accumulated 162 runs in the first innings, storming to the summit clash by 18 runs to inch a step closer to their goal.
