In another impressive display, South Africa emerged victorious in the clash against the Men in Greens. Their strategy of batting first, amassing a substantial total, and taking wickets under the evening lights has proven to be highly effective in this World Cup. The Proteas secured a dominant win with a substantial 149-run margin, marking their second consecutive lopsided victory at Wankhede Stadium. Unlike England, Bangladesh exhibited some resilience, primarily thanks to Mahmudullah Riyad. Aiden Markram, standing in as South Africa’s skipper, made the pivotal decision to bat first. Temba Bavuma remained on the bench, while Shakib Al Hasan returned to lead Bangladesh.

Bangladesh had a strong start, dismissing the two half-centurions from the previous match, Reeza Hendricks and Rassie van der Dussen, within the initial Powerplay. They celebrated prematurely, as the real challenge was yet to come. Quinton de Kock commenced his innings cautiously and gradually increased his scoring rate, eventually notching up his third World Cup century. He played a pivotal role in consecutive 100+ partnerships, with 131 runs alongside Markram for the 3rd wicket and 142 runs with Heinrich Klaasen for the 4th wicket. The first partnership laid the foundation, while the second firmly tilted the game in South Africa’s favour. Quinton de Kock delivered a breathtaking performance, amassing an impressive 174 runs from 140 balls, including 15 fours and 7 sixes, making his 150th ODI appearance truly special. Markram contributed 60 runs from 70 balls, while Klaasen was outstanding with his 90 from just 49 deliveries, narrowly missing out on a second century. David Miller played a crucial role, partnering with Klaasen to add 65 runs for the 5th wicket.

David Miller remained unbeaten at 34 runs from only 15 balls as South Africa posted a formidable total of 382/5 in their allotted 50 overs. While most of the bowlers suffered, wickets were shared among Hasan Mahmud, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Shakib Al Hasan, and Shoriful Islam. Facing a daunting task, Bangladesh began cautiously, accumulating 30 runs in the first six overs. However, Marco Jansen’s consecutive wickets in the 7th over triggered a downfall for the Bangla Tigers. Lizaad Williams, KG Rabada, and Gerald Coetzee quickly picked up wickets, and by the 22nd over, Bangladesh found themselves struggling at 81/6.

Mahmudullah remained resolute at one end, continuing to fight for his country. Several lower-order batsmen provided valuable support, with Riyad involved in partnerships of 41, 37, and 68 runs alongside Nasum Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, and Mustafizur Rahman for the 7th, 8th, and 9th wickets, respectively. Mahmudullah’s heroic efforts led to his third ODI World Cup century, a moment of pride for every Bangladeshi. His century allowed Bangladesh to reach a respectable total, but they were eventually bowled out for 233 in 46.4 overs.
