In the 2023 Cricket World Cup, Angelo Mathews has been brought in to replace the injured Matheesha Pathirana in the Sri Lankan squad. The experienced all-rounder, Angelo Mathews, is set to join the team as they prepare to face England in Bengaluru on Thursday. Pathirana suffered a shoulder injury during Sri Lanka’s match against Pakistan, sidelining the 20-year-old and causing him to miss subsequent games against Australia and the Netherlands. This marks Mathews’ fourth World Cup appearance since his debut in the 2011 edition, having played 221 ODIs for Sri Lanka. He boasts an impressive record with 5865 runs, including three centuries and 40 half-centuries, and has taken 120 wickets in the ODI format.

Angelo Mathews was recalled as a travelling reserve last week, along with pacer Dushmantha Chameera, after being initially left out of the World Cup squad. Unfortunately, Matheesha Pathirana is the second Sri Lankan player to be ruled out of the World Cup, following the captain, Dasun Shanaka, who had to return home due to a quadriceps tear that requires at least three weeks of recovery time. In Shanaka’s absence, Chamika Karunaratne has been named as his replacement, while Kusal Mendis has taken up the captaincy role for Sri Lanka.
