Ever since Pat Cummins’ donation of USD 50,000 to India for helping the country see through a deadly second wave of the coronavirus, several cricketers and franchises have extended monetary and moral support to the country. The latest to join the list would be West Indian cricketer Nicholas Pooran and his Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, Punjab Kings (PBKS). Pooran took to Twitter on Friday to express his concern for the dire situation in India at the moment, and pledged financial aid without disclosing the amount. He would donate part of his IPL salary to the country’s cause.

“Although many other countries are still being affected by the pandemic, the situation in India right now is particularly severe. I will do my part to bring awareness and financial assistance to this dire situation. #PrayForIndia,” he tweeted along with a video.

PBKS pitch in with timely assistance

Shortly after, Pooran’s IPL franchise PBKS also announced their decision to help the country through the pandemic. India’s healthcare system has been overwhelmed with demand for oxygen in light of new coronavirus infections, as the number of people getting admitted to hospitals also increase. The franchise on Friday took to Twitter to announce that they would be providing oxygen concentrators to the country with the help of an organisation called Round Table India.

“To help the fight against #COVID19 in India, #PBKS has pledged to provide oxygen concentrators with the help of @roundtableindia! We also request everyone to join in and help in whatever way possible because together, we can!” the tweet read.

Other franchises who have announced contributions to India’s fight against COVID-19 include the Delhi Capitals (DC) and the Rajasthan Royals (RR). The Royals announced a contribution of Rs 7.5 crores to provide immediate assistance to those impacted by the second wave of the pandemic in the country. Players, owners and the management have been working with RR’s philanthropic arm Royal Rajasthan Foundation (RRF) in partnership with the British Asian Trust (BAT).

DC co-owners JSW and the GMR Group, along with the franchise, are contributing Rs 1.5 crore to NCR-based NGOs the Hemkunt Foundation, and the Uday Foundation to help them to procure essential medical supplies which include oxygen cylinders, concentrators, and COVID Wellness Kits.
