The 32-year-old Bavuma has been named South Africa’s next Test captain. When Elgar led the Proteas as captain in their previous 17 Test matches, they won nine games, lost seven, and drew one. Bavuma will lead the team in ODIs in addition to serving as the Test captain. He has, however, stepped down as the T20I captain. The decision to step down as T20I captain was made in response to South Africa’s subpar showing in the previous two T20 World Cups. Following Elgar’s respectable performance as captain in the longest format of cricket, the 32-year-old will assume the captaincy in red-ball cricket. Elgar was unable to help the Proteas defeat India in a Test series.

Following their defeats in the previous two series, South Africa has made a number of adjustments to their lineup. There have been numerous rumours suggesting that JP Duminy would join the team as the batting coach. South Africa will next face the West Indies, who have just defeated Zimbabwe in a series, after overcoming England in a three-match ODI series. The Windies and Zimbabwe drew the first game of the series, but the Windies won the series by dominating the Chevrons.

“We trust he [Bavuma] will deliver on all our expectations and help carry the team forward after some excellent work by his predecessor Dean during the same period,” Enoch Nkwe, CSA’s director of cricket, said. “At the same time, I would like to sincerely thank Dean for all his commitment to the role over the past two years. He helped the team navigate through some stormy waters and put them in a good position on the ICC World Test Championship table. “Both men have made us proud with the work they have done within the wider Proteas group and look forward to the next step in what is a new era for the Proteas under the leadership of dual coaches Shukri Conrad and Rob Walter.”

South Africa’s Test squad for the West Indies series:
