Rajasthan Royals (RR) batsman Jos Buttler had words of praise for former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni while discussing the recent surge in wicket-keeper captains in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Buttler, who himself holds the position behind the stumps for his national side, will face the Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Monday. However, he will be positioned in the outfield as RR captain Sanju Samson is likely to hold on to his preferred keeper position. There are currently four wicket-keepers in the IPL who lead their respective franchises. These are KL Rahul (Punjab), Sanju Samson (Rajasthan), MS Dhoni (Chennai), and Rishabh Pant (Delhi).

“I am sure MSD (Dhoni) has something to do with the sixth sense and breeding of wicket-keepers who can captain. He obviously has been a fantastic captain and there are lots of players who want to follow his footsteps,” said Jos Buttler in an interaction with PTI Bhasha.

“I think a wicketkeeper has a brilliant view of the game. That can add to your decision-making as you can see first-hand how the wicket is behaving and the way bowlers are bowling,” he added.

Saturday saw a clash of generations as the Delhi Capitals took on the Chennai Super Kings. Rishabh Pant has been named as the skipper of the Delhi-based franchise at a very young age and he overcame his first task, which was beating his idol MS Dhoni with relative ease.

BUTTLER ON RR taking on PBKS

Buttler’s team will start their IPL 2021 campaign against the KL Rahul led PBKS on Monday. The Royals will be without their star bowler Jofra Archer, which might prove to be a concern against Punjab’s strong top order. He, however, was confident of his side and said that fellow countryman Ben Stokes would prove to be the X-factor for the franchise this season.

“We have lots of variety in the team this season with some world-class all-rounders like Ben Stokes and Chris Morris and a new captain. Sanju (Samson) is a very exciting player and has a long affiliation with the franchise,” he said. “He is a very calm person and likes to have fun. I am sure he would try and get across that to the team. There will be a lot of passion in his leadership,” stated the Englishman

“I strongly believe Ben Stokes will be the X-factor for our team in this season,” he concluded.
