The first Twenty20 International between Pakistan and Zimbabwe was a see-saw battle. On a slow deck in Harare, Mohammad Rizwan was the difference for both sides. His 82 was the highest from both sides where the next highest score was 34 by Craig Ervine. Rizwan’s 82 was actually the difference maker in the game as Zimbabwe lost a close game by 11 runs. In fact, Rizwan’s brilliant knock was made all the more important by his assault in the final over.

In the 20th over of the Pakistan innings bowled by Richard Ngarava, the last five balls turned the course of the match. Rizwan smashed three fours, a six and a two as 20 runs came off the final over. Rizwan hit the second ball for a four to cover while the third delivery was a couple. The Pakistan keeper blasted a six to deep midwicket as the fielder dropped the catch. The final two balls were dispatched to cover and deep backward square leg.

Pakistan get the momentum

Rizwan’s knock gave Pakistan the momentum. Zimbabwe lost two quick wickets and it needed a partnership of 56 between Ervine and Tinashe Kamunhukamwe to keep them in the game. However, when Zimbabwe lost four wickets for 18 runs thanks to a spell from Usman Qadir, Pakistan were in command.

But, Luke Jongwe refused to give up. He hit a six off Mohammad Hasnain and the equation boiled down to 20 off the last over. However, Haris Rauf held his nerve and Pakistan won by 11 runs. Had Rizwan not scored those 20 runs, Zimbabwe could have actually won the match. The last over proved to be a difference.

Zimbabwe will play three Twenty20 Internationals and two Tests that will be played till May 11. Both sides are not in the reckoning for the ICC World Test Championship final, with Zimbabwe not included in the first cycle.
