Former Australian cricketer and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batting coach Michael Hussey tested positive for the coronavirus on Tuesday. Thus, he becomes the latest in a long list of players involved in IPL 2021 to have tested positive. He is also the first member of a foreign contingent involved with the tournament to get infected. The BCCI recently suspended the IPL for an indefinite period after several instances of the breach of the bio-secure bubbles. Reportedly, CSK is at least the third franchise whose members have tested positive for COVID-19.

Michael Hussey will have to serve at least a 10-day isolation period at the team hotel in Delhi. This means that he will not be immediately be able to join the rest of his fellow countrymen who had taken part in the IPL in either Sri Lanka or The Maldives. This is part of a plan BCCI and Cricket Australia (CA) came up with. Australian borders are currently closed to anyone coming from India until at least May 15. This is over the high instance of coronavirus infections in the country.

Michael Hussey in good spirts: ACA chief

Todd Greenberg, chief executive of the Australian Cricketers’ Association said that he had spoken to Hussey and his symptoms were relatively mild. “We’ve spoken to Mike today. He is in good spirits,” he said. “His symptoms are relatively mild. He is in a stint of isolation in his hotel room…he has good support systems around him,” he concluded.

Hussey’s infection meant that he was the third member of the CSK camp to have tested positive for the virus after bowling coach Lakshmipathy Balaji and a member of the franchise’s service staff. Accoridng to reports, Hussey and Balaji were partners on the team bus. After his positive result, all CSK members had gone into a week-long quarantine in accordance with IPL’s medical guidelines.

Earlier, several players from various franchises had tested positive for the virus, which forced BCCI’s hand to indefinitely postpone the 2021 edition of the IPL. These players include Kolkata Knight Riders’ Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Wriddhiman Saha, and Delhi Capitals’ Amit Mishra.
