It is difficult to make sense of Ajinkya Rahane. He did not get a chance in the Indian cricket team for a couple of years despite prolific performances in the domestic circuit. For many years, there was a competition between him and Rohit Sharma in the domestic circuit for Mumbai. His starting point in Mumbai cricket included plenty of obstacles. He could not afford full-time coaching, staying in the backwaters of Mumbai in Dombivili. Everyday, in order to get to practice, he would have to go in the second-class compartments of the local trains with packed crowds.
Even in Mumbai cricket circles, he was touted as an individual who can hit fifties but not hundreds. But, at each and every step, he proved them wrong. Rahane made his debut in the Mohammad Nissar Trophy, a cross-border competition between India and Pakistan. Rahane hit a hundred when most of the Mumbai team first-choice players had not participated. From 2007 to 2011, Rahane was one of the best players in the domestic circuit.
His knocks against England Lions and an Australian Emerging Team further cemented his reputation. It was only a matter of time that he would be included. Rahane made it to the limited-overs leg of the England tour where he failed to impress. On every subsequent tour until 2013, Rahane warmed the benches. It seemed that he would be constant in that set-up rather than on the playing field.
Rahane made his debut in Delhi against Australia. But, he only got the chance when Shikhar Dhawan, who had hit 187 but fractured his finger in Mohali, was injured. He failed but was still included in the South Africa series. Against a bowling attack comprising Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, and Vernon Philander on a spicy Durban wicket, Rahane smashed 96. That was the knock that showed his worth.
For the next three years, Rahane was the best performer in overseas conditions. Centuries in Wellington, Melbourne and Lord’s confirmed his class. It was his century on a green top in Lord’s that ensured India ended their 28-year wait for a win in Lord’s. His partnership with Kohli in Melbourne was simply sublime.
But, Rahane’s a peculiar weakness against spin was confounding. For someone from India and Mumbai, the weakness against spin was something no one could comprehend. Over the next few years, Rahane’s returns decreased. As captain, Rahane would forever be remembered as the individual who scripted India’s epic series win in Australia in 2020/21. Captaining a virtual India C team, they upset Australia which included winning in Gabba after 32 years. But, with the batting returns diminishing, Rahane is at the crossroads of his career.
Ajinkya Rahane made his Test debut in 2013 against Australia in Delhi. His ODI and T20I debut came against England in Durham and Manchester during the 2011 tour. Rahane made his IPL debut for Mumbai Indians in the game against Deccan Chargers in 2008.
Ajinkya Rahane was in prime form from the period of 2014 to 2016 in overseas conditions. In the 2014 cycle in particular, Rahane hit a century in New Zealand, England and Australia. He is also one of the few Indians to hit a century in both innings of a Test match when he smashed twin tons in the Delhi Test against South Africa. In the IPL, he once hit six fours in one over in the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
