In a season that has already been mostly comprised of downs than ups, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) were dealt yet another blow, and this one is probably bigger than any loss they have faced yet. Skipper KL Rahul will be forced to sit out a big part of the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) season over health concerns. The wicket-keeper batter might not be available for the entire remainder of the season should the situation worsen. PBKS’ Twitter handle, on Sunday, sent out a tweet saying that Rahul was diagnosed with acute appendicitis and he would have to undergo surgery. Rahul has already left the IPL bio-bubble and been transferred to a hospital.

“KL Rahul complained of a severe abdomen pain last night and after not responding to medication, he was taken to the emergency room for further tests which revealed that he was diagnosed with acute appendicitis. It will be resolved surgically and for safety measures he has been transferred to the hospital for the same,” read the release on the PBKS tweet.

Rahul’s Absence A Massive Blow For PBKS

Rahul has been, undoubtedly, PBKS’ best and most consistent cricketer this season, and he is also in contention for the Orange Cap. He has already scored an incredible 331 runs in just seven matches this season and recorded a season-high score of an unbeaten 91. Considering that the skipper might have been struggling with health issues, his performance this season has been absolutely exceptional.

This might also have far-reaching implications for KL Rahul’s personal goals, considering his place in India’s T20 World Cup squad. It is expected that the PBKS skipper might be out of action for a while, and with the World Cup right around the corner, he would be required to stay match fit. Rahul might still be part of the squad, but he might not be given a start right away, and should his replacement perform exceptionally well, he might not even feature in the tournament.
