The second lot of players drawn on Day 2 of the IPL auction on Sunday (February 13) comprised of all-rounders. And these players were all by and large picked up by the franchises.

Aside from James Neesham and Chris Jordan – experienced players but with high base prices and mixed IPL records – all the all-rounders found a home among the franchises.

Liam Livingstone was the first player drawn and he went for a whopping Rs. 11.5 crores.

Dominic Drakes was up next, and the West Indian all-rounder went for a cool Rs. 1.1 crore. It was new franchise Gujarat Titans who secured his signature.

Indian all-rounder Jayant Yadav was next, and the former Mumbai Indians player was bagged by the Titans for Rs. 1.7 crore.

But they weren’t done yet as they straight away signed another Indian all-rounder, this time in the form of Vijay Shankar.

The Tamil Nadu-based player has played for a number of franchises till this point; it will be interesting to see if the Titans can give him the platform he needs to shine.

Odean Smith was next, and the highly-rated West Indian sparked a bidding war. Eventually he was sold to Punjab Kings, but they had to shell out Rs. 6 crore from their budget to get him.

Marco Jansen was next, and Mumbai Indians did what they felt was reasonable to get the South African back to the side. However, they were outbid by Sunrisers Hyderabad, who spent Rs. 4.2 crore on him.

Shivan Dube’s name was then out of the hat and the Indian again attracted interest from multiple sides. In the end, Chennai Super Kings swooped in and got him for Rs. 4 crore.

The final player auctioned in this set was Krishnappa Gowtham, who went to Lucknow Giants for 90 lakhs.

IPL auction goes mega

The 2022 edition of the IPL auction is set to be one of the biggest in recent memory. This is because of the addition of two new franchises into the fold.

Yes, the IPL is now back to being a 10-team tournament. This is not the first time such a concept has been trialled; the league switched to a similar format back in 2011 too.

However, the two new teams would get caught up in financial issues and fold soon enough. The two new teams for 2022, Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans, will hope to avoid a similar fate.

As things stand, both new teams have made some interesting signings before the auction. Gujarat will be captained by Hardik Pandya, and the team also has Afghanistan all-rounder Rashid Khan and Indian batsman Shubman Gill in their ranks.

Lucknow, on the other hand, have signed KL Rahul as their skipper along with Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis and uncapped Indian spinner Ravi Bishnoi.
