The mega-auction for IPL 2022 will take place on February 12-13 in Bangalore. According to a report in Cricbuzz, IPL officials called the franchises and locked in the dates. On February 12, there will be an ODI match between India and West Indies in Kolkata but that will be a totally different affair. With so many players up for grabs, the mega-auction will last two days. The last time there was a mega-auction for two days, it was in 2017 which involved two new franchises in Rising Pune Supergiant and Gujarat Lions.

The Cricbuzz report stated that the BCCI has told International and State Boards to send in the name of the players in the next couple of weeks. The deadline, reportedly, is January 17. In this mega-auction, there will be 10 teams and it is expected that 250 to 300 players will go under the hammer. The formal pre-auction briefing by the IPL will be conducted on February 11.

IPL 2022 Team Retentions could dictate Auctions

Big names were retained and there were more than a few surprises in the retention for the auction. The likes of Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, and Rohit Sharma were retained by their respective teams. However, there were a few omissions that fans might talk about for a while.

Mumbai Indians (MI) have not announced the names of Hardik or Krunal Pandya. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have not retained the likes of Yuzvendra Chahal, Devdutt Padikkal, and Harshal Patel.

Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians retain core

Reigning champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) seem to have made balanced choices. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have left out the likes of Eoin Morgan and Shubman Gill.

The most successful team in the history of the IPL, Mumbai Indians, has retained four players. They are Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, Jasprit Bumrah, and Suryakumar Yadav. All four have earned the right to stay in the team but the omission of the likes of Hardik and Krunal Pandya, Ishan Kishan, Quinton de Kock, and Trent Boult is a bit surprising given how much these respective players have individually contributed to the team.

Delhi Capitals unveil problem in IPL Auction

The 2020 IPL finalists had a problem of plenty in their squad. Kagiso Rabada, R Ashwin, Shikhar Dhawan, and Shreyas Iyer were some of the big names who were not retained by the franchise. Parth Jindal, the owner of Delhi Capitals stated, “The auction process is like this. Going forward, the IPL needs to look at it because it is not fair that you build up a team, give youngsters a chance, groom them and they get opportunities for the franchises and play for their country and then you lose them after three years. IPL needs to have a relook.”

Punjab Kings are revamping the whole team after the exit of KL Rahul. With his departure and also with Chris Gayle, Nicholas Pooran, Ravi Bishnoi also not retained, Punjab Kings are starting afresh. They have retained only two players and they might go for broke in the auction.
