IPL 2022: Auctioneer Hugh Edmeades collapses, lunch taken early

The unfortunate incident occurred as bidding was underway for Sri Lanka's Wanindu Hasaranga.

Hugh Edmeades, the auctioneer for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction Day 1, collapsed in the middle of the auction. While no details about his health has been released, more information is expected. Lunch was taken early due to the medical emergency and the auction is scheduled to restart at 3:30 pm IST. The unfortunate incident occurred as bidding was underway for Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga.

However, there was good news. According to a statement from a BCCI spokesperson, she said, “Our auctioneer is stable. The medical guys are attending to him. He should be back for the next set.”

Who is Hugh Edmeades?

Hugh Edmeades of the United Kingdom will be in charge of the show this weekend in Bengaluru. In 2018, the Board of Control for Cricket in India appointed him to replace Richard Madley. He’s been a familiar face in the players’ auction since then. Edmeades has conducted over 2500 auctions around the world in his 36-year career. He has sold over 3 lakh lots for a total of over 2.7 billion pounds as an international fine art, classic car, and charity auctioneer.

Paintings, fine furniture, ceramics, and works of art, as well as film and sporting memorabilia, are among the items that the Brit has dealt with. In 2004, he organized an auction of 88 guitars belonging to Eric Clapton, which raised USD 7,438,624. In 2016, he sold Daniel Craig’s Aston Martin DB10 from James Bond’s Spectre for 2,434,500 pounds which was one of his other unusual highlights.

Edmeades was the auctioneer at the Nelson Mandela 90th Birthday Gala in London in 2008, and he conducted the BBC’s televised celebrity auction in aid of Children in Need in 2005. He’s also held auctions in 30 cities around the world for over 850 charity fundraisers.

The mega auction

The IPL 2022 Mega Auction will start on February 12 and end on February 13. This is the first major IPL mega auction after a decade. It is reported that a total of 97 players will go under the hammer on Saturday. Following that, the rest of the elite players will be finished on Sunday afternoon. After that, there will be an accelerated auction for the remaining players.

Initially, it was reported that 590 players will go under the hammer. Now, according to an ESPNCricinfo report, there will be a total of 600 players. The reason – 10 players including Under-19 World Cup stars have been added. This includes seven Indian players and three Australian players. All of them are in the Rs 20 lakh base price category. These include Agnivesh Ayachi, Hardik Tamore, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Mihir Hirwani, Monu Kumar, Rohan Rana, Sairaj Patil. The three Australians are Aaron Hardie, Lance Morris, Nivethan Radhakrishnan in the revised list.
