The 16th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 saw the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli set a record of being the first batsman to score 6,000 runs in the Indian Premier League (IPL), after his incredible performance in the match against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday. The record further solidifies Virat’s position as one of the best batters India has ever produced and he still has several years left under his belt. Before the match began, he needed 51 runs to reach the mark.

Virat Kohli has been part of the IPL since its inaugural season in 2008. He has been a part of the RCB side since the beginning. Before this game, the Indian skipper had scored 5,949 runs in 196 matches at a strike rate of 130 and average close to 38.

His best season as an individual player came in 2016 when he scored a whopping 973 runs in 16 matches and recorded his best score of 113. Ever since the 2009 season, Kohli has consistently scored over 300 runs in every season since. Undoubtedly, he is the Challengers’ best batter and their talisman.

No IPL glory yet for Virat Kohli

He, however, is yet to lead his team to IPL glory yet. His national vice-captain Rohit Sharma has done it quite a number of times with the Mumbai Indians as had his previous national captain, MS Dhoni.

For a player like Kohli who pushes himself to improve every single day, being the best batter in the world simply is not a good enough feat. His quality and drive make fans expect more out of him, especially with him being the Indian captain now.

However, his record with the bat in the IPL is astronomical in every way. He has been the best batter in the tournament’s history and the numbers support it.

Kohli needed to get 51 runs to reach the 6,000 run mark which he did comfortably against RR in their IPL 2021 encounter.
