IPL 2021: MS Dhoni fined for slow over-rate in the season opener for CSK. Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni was fined Rs 12 lakh for slow over-rate. The 3-time champions lost their first match of the Indian Premier League 2021 against Delhi Capitals on Saturday.

MS Dhoni was fined by IPL after CSK failed to complete a stipulated number of overs in an hour, according to the new IPL CoC. Since it was his side’s first fault, the former India captain was penalised with a fine.

“As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Mr Dhoni was fined Rs 12 lakh,” a statement from the IPL read.

What is the IPL 2021 Code of Conduct

In the last few seasons, the IPL organisers have been observing that the matches are crossing the scheduled finish time. To curb this problem, they put in place strict regulations with regards to the over-rates.

According to IPL 2021 Code of Conduct, the minimum over-rate for IPL should be 14.1 overs per hour. These should be separate from the time allotted for the strategic time-outs. In uninterrupted matches, the BCCI expects teams to finish 20 overs within 90 minutes.

CSK bowled only 18.4 overs since Delhi Capitals chased the 189-run target with 8 balls to spare. CSK’s bowling unit failed as Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw scored on pitch with class. The duo scored 138-run opening stand in just 13.3 overs.

MS Dhoni and CSK bowlers struggled with the dew that was present in the Wankhede Stadium in the late evening. Dhoni pointed out the role of the dew. He said teams batting first in Mumbai should look to score about 200 or more.

“The opposition have half an hour in a 7:30 start, when the pitch is really tacky and the ball stops a bit, so we need to get 15-20 runs extra to be safe. If we get dew consistently, then 200 will be a must on a pitch like this,” Dhoni said.
