Mumbai Indians (MI) fast-bowler Jasprit Bumrah recorded his worst bowling figures in the T20 format of the game, during an Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 league encounter against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Bumrah conceded 56 runs while accounting for the dismissal of Moeen Ali, which is certainly unexpected considering the calibre of the pacer. The 27-year-old further recorded his most expensive spell in the history of the cash-rich league, which is an area of massive concern.

This is the first time since 2016 that the pacer has conceded runs in excess of 50, in an IPL game. It is overall the third time Bumrah conceded 50 + runs in an IPL match. The first two instances were recorded in the 2015 edition when he conceded 52 and 55 runs respectively in encounters against Delhi Capitals (DC) and Royal Challengers Banglore (RCB).

Ambati Rayadu’s Magical Knock

Ambati Rayadu and Ravindra Jadeja smashed 21 runs off Bumrah’s third over of the spell, with the former hitting two boundaries and a six. Rayadu finished with 72 runs off 27 deliveries, marking a strike rate of 266.67. It is the second-highest strike rate by a CSK player in the history of IPL for an innings in excess of 50 runs. Suresh Raina’s famous 25-ball 87 at Wankhede leads the list.

The pacer had earlier conceded 17 runs in his second over, after Faf du Plessis accumulated two sixes and a boundary off the opening three deliveries.

The game marks the most number of runs conceded by the top three bowlers of a team, according to the bowling position. Trent Boult, Dhawal Kulkarni and Jasprit Bumrah conceded 146 runs tonight, leading the charts. The second position is held by Iqbal Abdulla, Varun Aaron and Abu Nechim who together leaked 144 runs in a game between RCB and MI in 2015. Arshdeep Singh, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Mohammed Shami have conceded the same number of runs (144) in a clash between Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) now known as Punjab Kings (PBKS) and SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 2019 edition of the cash-rich league.

It will be interesting to see how Bumrah goes about making a comeback in this tough scenario.
