Mumbai will host 10 games of the IPL from April 10 to April 24 despite the lockdown measures imposed in the state.
After plenty of uncertainty, Mumbai’s Wankhede stadium will host IPL 2021 matches from April 10 to April 24. This comes after the Maharashtra government imposed some restrictions to tackle the coronavirus situation. On Sunday, India saw more than one lakh cases for the first time ever since the pandemic. Maharashtra has imposed a total lockdown on weekends while there will be night curfew from 8 PM to 7 AM on weekdays.
According to a Mumbai Mirror report, an MCA official said cricket players can practice normally and any activity that is part of the bio-bubble will be permitted. The report quoted the Mumbai Municipal commissioner who said the lockdown will have no impact on the IPL games.
Before IPL 2021 has begun, the coronavirus has cast a big cloud. Axar Patel, Devdutt Padikkal and Nitish Rana tested positive for COVID-19. Eight Wankhede stadium groundstaff also tested positive. The BCCI made contingent plans for Hyderabad to be the back-up venue if the situation in Mumbai worsened. Mumbai has seen over 9000 cases on a daily basis for the past couple of days.
The assurance by the state government has given IPL franchises plenty to cheer. Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, Royals Challengers Bangalore, Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders are the franchises that will play in Mumbai.
The first match of IPL 2021 will take place on April 9 in Chennai. Five-time champions Mumbai Indians will take on Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore. All matches will be held behind closed doors.
