Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) all-rounder Andre Russell helped his franchise knock out defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) for 152 in an IPL 2021 league encounter. Russell who was playing his 350th match in the T20 format recorded a five-wicket haul against MI, finishing with his best-ever figures in the shortest format. The same was registered in 12 balls, which is certainly astounding, to say the least. The Windies all-rounder is now the first bowler in the history of IPL to take a fifer in just two overs.

The 32-year-old was introduced into the attack in the 17th over, where he managed to complete two dismissals. He then followed it up by accounting for three more dismissals in the 20th over. The 32-year-old’s figures of 5/15 are now the best bowling figures registered by a KKR player, surpassing Sunil Narine’s 5/19. Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Marco Jansen, Rahul Chahar and Jasprit Bumrah were the batsmen dismissed.

Russell is further the second player to record a five-wicket haul against the Mumbai-based franchise. Interestingly, Harshal Patel became the first cricketer to take five wickets against MI in the history of the cash-rich league, in the 2021 edition’s league opener between the defending champions and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Russell: The Magician

Russell kissed the logo of the Kolkata-based franchise following the five-wicket haul. He was sent to Texas by KKR in order to boost overall fitness, following an average performance in the 2020 edition.

The Windies all-rounder is a beloved character in the team dressing room. He is known for his ability to smash the ball to all corners of the ground. Russell has scored 1,522 runs at a marvellous strike rate of 181.83 in 76 IPL matches so far. His highest score in the cash-rich league is an unbeaten 88. Russell has further smashed 129 sixes in the tournament so far.

The Windies all-rounder made his debut in the IPL with the Delhi Capitals, formerly known as Delhi Daredevils, back in 2012. He played for the Delhi-based franchise for 2 seasons before moving to Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014.
