Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) skipper David Warner slammed his team’s batsmen for their approach during SRH’s IPL 2021 defeat to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). He was particularly disappointed that they were playing cross-batted shots against left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed and not building partnerships on an Chennai pitch that once again proved hard for batsmen on Wednesday.

“A very big, bitter pill to swallow. We needed two set batsmen at the end, but we failed to do that. We needed to build a partnership and play proper cricket shots,” said Warner after the match.

“I was quite disappointed with how we went — cross-batted shots against left-arm orthodox (Shahbaz Ahmed). It hurts,” he added.

Warner himself scored an impressive half-century, 54 off 37 balls, which put Hyderabad on the path to victory. However, the remaining batsmen struggled to get going.

Hyderabad lost the plt in the 17th over when Jonny Bairstow, Manish Pandey and Abdus Samad all fell while trying to smack left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed. They all fell in one over, playing cross-batted shots.

Warner expects revival in form

Warner, however, is hopeful his team will find some form and do better in the upcoming matches.

“We know how to approach in the upcoming games. There’s another three games here and I think the wickets are going to get better. We need minimum damage in the first six overs and play simple cricket,” added Warner.

He also noted that teams batting second should have won all the games in Chennai even though they struggled to chase modest targets.

The Chepauk track is living up to its name of being a death trap for batsmen. It was not like SRH have been the track’s only victim in IPL 2021.

RCB struggled to get going, and so did Mumbai Indians (MI) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The game was like a carbon copy of the KKR vs MI game and the scorecards of both SRH and RCB bear a similar resemblance.
