AB de Villiers was the star yet again as it was his beautiful yet brutal assault that saw Royal Challengers Bangalore pip defending champions Mumbai Indians by two wickets in a last-ball thriller in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 opener in Chennai on Friday. De Villiers smashed 48 off 27 balls after RCB were down in the dumps at 106-5. Harshal Patel capped off his dream day by scraping a single off the final delivery to reach the target of 160 in 20 overs. Earlier, he ended the innings with figures of 5-27 and narrowly missed out on a hat-trick.

The defending champions’ loss in the opening game hardly comes as a surprise. Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians have now lost their last nine opening games. Sharma would not be much bothered by the loss today since his side has shown on more than one occasion that they can win the IPL irrespective of the opening-day result.
The game also saw Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell break his six-drought. The Australian had not hit a single one out of the park for the entirety of last season.
