Kolkata Knight Riders’ IPL 2021 campaign went from bad to worse after suffering a heavy loss to Delhi Capitals. Eoin Morgan’s team put up an inconsistent performance with the bat. They stumbled in the middle overs to be reduced to 82/5. After Dinesh Karthik fell and with Andre Russell scoring slowly, Kolkata Knight Riders looked like ending with a below-par score. However, Russell smashed 29 runs off eight balls as Kolkata Knight Riders scored 42 runs in the last three overs.
With the ball, Kolkata Knight Riders were put to the sword by Prithvi Shaw. The Mumbai batsman hit six fours in one over bowled by Shivam Mavi. Shaw blasted 82 off 41 balls and his 132-run stand with Shikhar Dhawan helped Delhi Capitals win the match by seven wickets. After the end of the match, Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Eoin Morgan admitted that the team was poor in all departments.
“We were slow off the blocks with the bat. Then got slow off the blocks with the ball. Shaw played brilliantly, nothing much we could do. It also shows how good the surface was. We weren’t good enough with all departments,” Morgan said.
Shaw’s opening partner Shikhar Dhawan, who is the Orange Cap holder, said Shaw played on a different level. The left-hander also said that taking smart risks was the best way going forward for the side.
“Prithvi was playing amazing, was lovely to watch it from the other end. We were getting so many runs, I didn’t think of taking too many risks and played according to the game situation. He was playing totally on a different level. It was lovely to watch him as well. I enjoy taking smart risks and trying something new as well rather than just sticking to the same process. When you take risks, you get reward and you get out as well, so I enjoy taking that risk,” Dhawan said.
Delhi Capitals, Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore are on 10 points. Delhi Capitals will take on Punjab Kings on Sunday. Kolkata Knight Riders will take on Royal Challengers Bangalore on Monday.
