India were 31 for 4, and they were going nowhere. What followed was an epic partnership between Kohli and Hardik Pandya, and when it got down to the wire, when it came down to 28 to win off eight balls, Kohli was the one who found the way to the boundary. Haris Rauf was hit for two consecutive sixes, putting all the pressure on Mohammad Nawaz, whose last over had been held back.

At the close of a topsy-turvy inning, Pakistan set India 160 to chase. Arshdeep immediately got rid of both Babar and Rizwan. Pakistan rallied back via Iftikhar and Masood. On his approach to fifty, Iftikhar took on the spinners, blasting three sixes off an Axar Patel over. Their combination created the platform for a tremendous finale, but India came back strong with a couple of wickets.

Those two guys (Kohli and Pandya) are experienced. Staying calm and taking the game deep was very critical. Good for our confidence. Always crucial to get off the mark like this. The way we won that’s more pleasing for us. Hats off to Virat for the way he batted, has to be the best innings he has played for India.

Rohit Sharma said at the end of the game.

India vs Pakistan, T20 World Cup 2022: Credit to Virat Kohli: Babar Azam

Our bowlers bowled really well. All credit to Kohli and Pandya. It wasn’t easy with the new ball. We had partnerships after 10 overs. We had a chance. We tried to stick to our plans. But credit to Virat Kohli for that innings.

Babar Azam said after the match.
