Shikhar Dhawan’s India cricket team created history by winning the first ODI by seven wickets against Sri Lanka in Colombo. Dhawan led from the front and aided by a brilliant fifty from Ishan Kishan on debut, India romped home to a magnificent win. Earlier, Deepak Chahar, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Kuldeep Yadav took two wickets apiece. Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya took one wicket each. The win continued to showcase the Indian cricket team’s depth and bench strength.

Dhawan and temporary head coach Rahul Dravid got their campaigns off to a great start with the win. However, in the course of the win, the Indian cricket team created some records. There was also a historic achievement of Ishan Kishan in the knock in Colombo. Here are some of the records created by the Indian cricket team.

Records by the Indian cricket team

1 – Ishan Kishan is the first player in the history of cricket to hit a fifty in both ODI and T20I debut. In the game against England, he hit 56 in Ahmedabad. On his ODI debut, he hit 59 against Sri Lanka. The audacity of Kishan was such that he got going in ODIs with a six.

9 – This was the ninth consecutive win for India against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka. Ever since 2012, India has established their dominance in Sri Lanka. The last time India lost to Sri Lanka was in 2012 in Hambantota. Since then, they have won all their games in 2017 and now in 2021.

6 – Number of losses for India in contests against Sri Lanka in the last decade. Sri Lanka defeated India in Brisbane, Hambantota, Kingston, Fatullah, The Oval, and Dharamshala. But, at the same time, India has won 25 ODIs with one match being tied in the 2012 ODI in Adelaide.

44 – Number of ODI wins for India in Sri Lanka. India is only the third country after Pakistan and Australia to have more ODI wins than losses in Sri Lanka. Australia has won 20 and lost 16 ODIs. Pakistan has registered a total of 32 wins with 27 losses.

25 – The number will now represent a coincidence for India and Sri Lanka. Dhawan and Dasun Shanaka were the 25th captains for their respective teams. In the same match, Minod Bhanuka and Kishan made their debuts as wicketkeepers for Sri Lanka and India.

6000 – Shikhar Dhawan went past 6000 runs during his knock of 86 against Sri Lanka. He became the 20th left-hander to go past 6000 runs in ODIs. Kumar Sangakkara has the most with over 14000 runs in his near two-decade career.

India gunning for 6-0 against Sri Lanka

With the Sri Lanka cricket team undergoing a crisis, they will head into the second ODI low on confidence. The batting looked in good shape but the bowling let them down. The power-packed Indian batting easily took apart the Sri Lanka bowling. Dushmantha Chameera, Isuru Udana, Dhananjaya de Silva, Lakshan Sandakan, and Wanindu Hasaranga were experienced but they lacked potency.

In the Indian cricket team, 14 out of the players have at least played international cricket. The Sri Lanka team is missing players like Niroshan Dickwella, Kusal Mendis, and Dhanushka Gunathilaka after breaching the coronavirus bio-bubble in England. With two ODIs and three T20Is scheduled, India will be determined to achieve a 6-0 whitewash. In 2017, India achieved a tour wash of Sri Lanka, beating them 3-0, 5-0, and winning the one-off T20I in Colombo.
