Rohit Sharma announced himself at the biggest stage of cricket in some style. The Hitman belted the Afghani bowlers to notch up his maiden ton of the ICC World Cup 2023. In the process, Rohit also surpassed the record of the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. Rohit Sharma slammed his 31st ODI century and put India on course for a mammoth win against Afghanistan. Additionally, Rohit also got to the fastest century ever by an Indian in the history of the World Cup. Sharma reached his ton off 63 balls. Before Rohit, the milestone belonged to Kapil Dev who scored a blistering 72 balls century against Zimbabwe in 1983.

Rohit’s majestic ton

Rohit Sharma hit a destructive ton to take his side to a comfortable position against Afghanistan’s 273 runs. Sharma’s marauding century also saw him surpass the legendary Sachin Tendulkar for the most hundreds in World Cup history. The Master Blaster had 6 World Cup centuries to his name. On the other hand, Rohit Sharma has bettered that record by going to his 7th ton. Tendulkar played five World Cups from 1992 to 2011 and smashed six centuries. His last century (111) came against South Africa in Bengaluru during his 41st innings.

However, for Hitman this was only his 19th innings in the World Cup. Naturally, it is expected that some more records are on the way to tumble. Rohit’s century cements his position at the top of the order. It also removes the cloud of uncertainty that was hovering over Dravid’s head following a dismal performance against Australia in the first game. Along with Rohit, the stand-in opener also looked rock solid at the top. Kishan steered the ship for his run a ball 47 while Rohit took the role of being the aggressor. In the end, Rohit fell for a well-made 131 runs off 84 balls while Kishan too fell 3 runs short of his half-century. Both the wickets were taken by Rashid Khan.
