Afghanistan scored their highest score of 272 in 50 overs against India in the World Cup as well as in ODIs. India needs 273 runs to get back-to-back wins. Although there might be dew in the evening it could be a different track under the lights. Subsequently, Naveen-ul-Haq vs Virat Kohli could set the stage on fire as well.
On batting friendly pitch Afghanistan won the toss and opted to bat first. The top three batsmen- Gurbaz, Zadran and Rahmat Shah all looked promising. However, none of them were able to convert their starts into a big score. Naturally, the Afghanistan team was tattering at 63/3 at the end of the 14th over. The Indian bowlers were keeping a tight lid on their opponents.
However, skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai who was promoted to number 5 started a counter-attack. The former steered the ship while the latter took the aggressive route. Shahidi and Omarzai added a partnership of 121 runs for the 4th wicket. Shahidi scored 80 off 88 balls, while Omarzai hammered 62 off 69 balls. However, when it looked like Afghanistan would walk away with the match, the Indian bowlers found regular wickets in the back end of the innings.
Jasprit Bumrah was excellent and ended his day with figures of 10-0-39-4. Birthday Boy Hardik Pandya was good, too, picking 2 wickets in his 7 overs, giving away 43 runs. Shardul Thakur and Kuldeep Yadav picked a wicket each. Siraj was not up to the mark, conceding boundaries in his every over and was taken to the cleaners, going for 76 runs in 9 overs.
