ICC World Cup 2023: Rohit Sharma breaks record for most sixes in international cricket across all formats

Indian captain ‘Hitman’ Rohit Sharma renowned for his explosive batting prowess has yet again etched his name at the world stage. Moreover, Rohit got to the fastest century ever by an Indian in the history of the World Cup. Sharma reached his ton off 63 balls. Before Rohit, the milestone belonged to Kapil Dev who scored a blistering 72 balls century against Zimbabwe in 1983. Not only that Rohit also surpassed the Little Master to notch up his 7th century in the World Cup. In a day when records went tumbling down, Rohit overtook three legends of the game- Sachin Tendulkar, Chris Gayle and Kapil Dev. It can be safely said that the Indian captain has announced himself at the biggest stage of cricket in some style.

Rohit’s six hitting record

India’s Rohit Sharma broke the record for the most international sixes across formats. The Hitman eclipsed the record of the West Indian batsman Chris Gayle. This majestic record came during the ICC World Cup 2023 match against Afghanistan in Delhi on Wednesday. West Indies powerhouse Chris Gayle had amassed a haul of 553 sixes in 551 innings. However, Rohit reached the milestone in just 473 innings.

Rohit began the match against Afghanistan in Delhi with 551 sixes which he quickly surpassed. The record breaking moment came when he hit the six off the bowling of Naveen ul Haq in the 8th over. Subsequently, Rohit achieved his 554th maximum in international cricket to claim the coveted record. The record-setting six that propelled Rohit to this historic achievement was struck over deep square leg which cam from a short delivery by Naveen. Over the years, the extraordinary ability to send the ball into the stands has made the Indian captain a crowd favourite.
