The coronavirus pandemic has thrown the sporting calendar out of gear in many parts of the globe. The Big Bash League is no exception. Matches have been rescheduled and many players in teams have tested positive for the coronavirus. One of the rescheduled games was the clash between Melbourne Stars and Perth Scorchers. The game, played in Geelong started with Perth Scorchers opting to bat against the Stars.

Kurtis Patterson started well but in the third over bowled by Pakistan pacer Haris Rauf, a moment took place which went viral for all the right reasons. Rauf bowled a full ball angled across to Patterson who edged it to the keeper. The wicket celebration was a sight altogether. Rauf took out an imaginary sanitizer, poured it on the hands, and rubbed it. He then took a face mask from his pocket and wore it.

Perth Scorchers power Melbourne Stars for 10th win

However, the wicket celebration of Haris Raf was the only thing that was worth smiling for the Melbourne Stars. Nick Hobson and Laurie Evans shared a partnership of 83 to boost the Scorchers. Evans, in particular, was in fine form as he hammered 69 off 46 balls, with two fours and five sixes. Ashton Turner, the Perth Scorchers captain, then ended the innings in grand style with 47 off 26 balls. The knock included three fours and three sixes as Perth Scorchers ended on 196/3.

In response, Melbourne Stars stayed in the game with a superb 63 from Beau Webster. His knock came off 47 balls and included seven fours and two sixes. But, the Stars lost Joe Burns and Glenn Maxwell in quick succession to stall their chase. Matthew Kelly picked up 4/25 as the Melbourne Stars collapsed. They were restricted to 149/9, giving Perth Scorchers their 10th win.

Perth Scorchers are firmly on top of the table with 37 points from 12 games and are all but certain of a playoff spot. Melbourne Stars are in seventh position and their chances of a playoff spot are in real danger. Sydney Thunder, Sydney Sixers, Hobart Hurricanes and the Brisbane Heat are the other teams in the fray for the playoff spot.

Perth Scorchers’ last two games are against the Adelaide Strikers and Brisbane Heat. The final will be on January 28.
