Eoin Morgan’s Kolkata Knight Riders not just lost their third straight game in IPL 2021 but the skipper was fined for a slow over-rate offence.
Kolkata Knight Riders’ campaign in IPL 2021 worsened after their third straight loss. Chasing 221, Kolkata Knight Riders were reduced to 31/5. Andre Russell, Dinesh Karthik and Pat Cummins put on a brilliant show. Cumminssmashed 30 runs in one over bowled by Sam Curran and kept Kolkata Knight Riders in the game. His 65 resulted in Kolkata Knight Riders needing 21 runs off the final over. However, Prasidh Krishna was run-out as Chennai Super Kings emerged victorious by 20 runs.
To make matters worse, Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Eoin Morgan was fined for a slow over-rate offence. In a statement released by the IPL, it said, “As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over rate offences, Morgan was fined Rs 12 lakh.”
According to the IPL Code of Conduct, if the offence happens for the second time , the fine for the captain is Rs 24 lakh. Every other member of the playing XI is fined 25 percent of match fee. If the offence happens for the third time, the captain has to pay Rs 30 lakh and serve a one-match ban. The rest of the members of the playing XI are charged 50 percent of match fee.
Morgan lamented that the powerplay batting made the game very difficult for Kolkata Knight Riders. The two-time champions were reduced to 31/5 thanks to Deepak Chahar taking four wickets.
“The first five overs of our batting didn’t go our way. We didn’t play as well as would have liked. If we had built a partnership and taken advantage of those early overs, we would have been in a really strong position,” Morgan said.
