It is no secret that Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah came under heavy criticism after his woeful performance in the final of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC). Fortunately for India, the pacer got back to his best against England in the first of the five-match Test series. Bumrah picked five wickets in England’s second innings and four in the first. A total of nine wickets in a Test match is an incredible feat. When asked whether he had made any changes to his game, Bumrah said that he was polishing upon the skills he already knew he had and was not focused on changing anything major in his arsenal.

“Not a lot of adjustments (in bowling since WTC final) to be honest. Just the mindset adjustments and probably not looking at the result a little too much. I am trying to be in the moment and back my skills. I am just trying to improve my game and make new additions but carrying the things I still have,” the Indian pacer said.

USEFUL WITH BALL AND BAT

It was not just the ball that Jasprit Bumrah impressed with. He also managed to get his highest Test cricket score with the bat. The pacer scored 28 valuable runs towards the end of the first Indian innings to help them get to a stronger position on the scorecard. With the ball, Bumrah possibly had a better game than anyone else. He recorded figures of 4-46 in the first innings and followed that up with 5-64 in the next. There is a very good possibility that the Mumbai Indians (MI) pacer will be awarded the man of the match prize at the end of the contest.

It was the pacer’s sixth five-wicket haul in his Test cricket career. The performance helped India bowl out England for a decent score of 303.

It left the Indians a target of 209, something that does not seem all very challenging. But at the end of play on day 4, India was at 52-1. KL Rahul was the only person who was dismissed.

He had scored 26 runs off 38 deliveries. Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara are the two people currently in the middle for Virat Kohli’s men. Both have scored 13 runs so far.

‘ONE SESSION AT A TIME’ – Jasprit Bumrah

Speaking about the match, Bumrah said that the team was not looking too far ahead, although victory seemed to be in sight. He said that they would focus on one session at a time and hopefully get the first win of the series.

“We don’t want to look too far ahead. We are off to a good start and would look to play session by session with a good mindset tomorrow and pick things from there,” the pacer said.

It was indeed a performance that was necessary for Bumrah. His skill with the ball was brought into question and he was under severe criticism after his performance in the WTC final.

The pacer did not pick a single wicket in the match which saw New Zealand beat India. Two ducks with the bat in the match also did not help his cause at the time.

However, he seems to have gotten his form back and has proven that he still is India’s premier fast bowler.
