The Test match between England and Australia is delicately poised after two captivating days of cricket. The anticipation is high for a thrilling battle between the two teams. England will begin the 3rd day’s play at 278/4 in 61 overs, trailing Australia by 138 runs. The partnership between Harry Brook, who is batting on 45 off 51 balls, and captain Ben Stokes, resuming his innings at 17 off 57 deliveries, holds the key to England’s fortunes. Their 56-run partnership for the fifth wicket will be crucial in determining the course of this Test.

In the first innings, England did well to wrap up the Australia innings at 416 after the visitors resumed at 339/5. However, they were unable to stop the prolific Steven Smith from notching up yet another Test century. Despite this, England showcased collective effort in restricting Australia and preventing their tailenders from making significant contributions.

In response, England made a strong start with openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett forging a solid 91-run partnership for the first wicket. Nathan Lyon finally broke the stand by dismissing Crawley just short of his half-century after toiling hard for 17 overs. Duckett continued his impressive form but fell agonizingly close to achieving a spot on the honours board, missing out on his century by just two runs. Shortly after, both Duckett and Ollie Pope departed in quick succession, leaving England at 222/4. Although Cameron Green’s no-ball saved Joe Root, Mitchell Starc claimed his wicket a few overs later, further denting England’s position.

However, a crucial rebuilding partnership between Brook and Stokes has brought the match back into equilibrium. With Nathan Lyon forced to leave the field due to a calf issue after the 37th over, Australia found themselves a bowler short. Lyon, a pivotal player for Australia in recent years, arrived at the ground on crutches, suggesting that his participation for the remainder of the match is unlikely. As the action resumes, all eyes will be on England and Australia as they play for a win in this captivating Ashes Test.
