St Kitts & Nevis Patriots were unbeaten in the ongoing edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) not so long ago. However, they have now been relegated to their third consecutive defeat, following a loss against Jamaica Tallawahs by a margin of 22 runs in a league encounter. The absence of Sherfane Rutherford who missed out after splitting the webbing on his hand and Dwayne Bravo certainly played a crucial role in determining the final scoreline. The duo had been key contributors in the previous fixture between these sides a week ago.

Andre Russell makes his presence felt

The Tallawahs got off to a strong start after being sent in to bat, with openers Kennar Lewis and Kirk McKenzie ensuring a solid beginning to the innings. Shamarh Brooks (43) and skipper Rovman Powell (37 off 19) made their presence felt with solid contributions following their departure, as St Kitts & Nevis Patriots bowlers struggled to stop the flow of runs. Andre Russell ensured the perfect end to proceedings, smashing 28 runs off 17 deliveries in an innings comprising of two boundaries and three sixes.

Dominic Drakes, Fawad Ahmed and Jon-Russ Jaggesar chipped in with two dismissals apiece. Fabian Allen and Paul van Meekeren accounted for a wicket each.

The Patriots batting department struggled to mount a serious charge at any stage, with Devon Thomas (35 off 36) and Joshua Da Silva (28 off 31) the top run-getters. Migael Pretorius was the pick of the bowlers for the Tallawahs accounting for three dismissals. Veerasammy Permaul further picked two wickets.

“Long time we haven’t got a win”

Powell was very happy with the triumph, admitting that the batting had been struggling.

“Long time we haven’t got a win. Important to get two points. The batting’s been struggling. That was the most pleasing aspect today. We use him as a glue, ask him to bring out Test match experience in our batting lineup. Satisfying to watch Shamarh bat like that,” he stated as quoted by Cricbuzz.

Gayle, the Patriots stand-in skipper expressed a desire to complete a rebound and deliver a fine performance against Trinbago Knight Riders.

“Thought the bowlers did a brilliant job to pull back Jamaica to 170. After we lost two wickets, we lost momentum and left it late. It was par. Even if it was spinning, it’s not that there were any demons. Have to rebound and come back against Trinidad. When your back’s against the ball, need to dig to find a match-winning innings. Hopefully it’ll be in the next game,” he said.

“I’m not pleased with how the things are going”

Russell was named as the Player of the Match, but expressed his displeasure over the team’s performance in the last few games.

“I’m not pleased with how the things are going, should have done better in the last few games. It was a total team effort, so appreciate everyone’s efforts. Happy that we didn’t lose wickets in the first six overs. Hope I can get my range back (while batting). We all are friends, at the end of the day it was a good team effort from the Jamaica Tallawahs,” he stated.
