In sports and entertainment, when one talks about the No.21, it is associated with the Undertaker’s streak in Wrestlemania. That all came to an end when Brock Lesnar defeated him and ended ‘The Streak’. A similar situation, albeit in a different sport, now awaits the Australia women’s cricket team. The multiple-time world champions have won 21 consecutive games and heading into the match against New Zealand on April 4, both sides have a chance to create history.

Australia’s winning sequence in ODIs began in March 2018 against India in Vadodara. Since then, they have whitewashed sides like India, Pakistan, West Indies, England, Sri Lanka as well as the White Ferns. In fact, they have whitewashed New Zealand twice in the ongoing streak. Just to give perspective, the Australia men’s cricket team also won 21 matches on the trot in 2003. Thus, on Sunday, history will be created.

The Australia women’s team last suffered a loss in October 2017 when they lost by 20 runs to England in Coffs Harbour.

The dominance of Australia

The Australia women’s cricket team have established a new standard of dominance in cricket. They have won the most World T20s with five titles in seven editions. In fact, the Australia team has won two consecutive World T20s twice in 2012 and 2014 as well as 2018 and 2020.

The Australia women’s cricket team, just like their male counterparts, have a dominant win-loss ratio against all teams. The men’s team have lost more to South Africa but that has been in the last couple of years.

Australia women’s team had held the earlier record of most consecutive wins in Twenty20 Internationals with 16 but that has now been eclipsed. From 2018 to 2019, the Thailand women’s team have won 17.

A win on Sunday will make the Australia women’s cricket team the first nation to win 22 consecutive games in cricket. Twice, Australia men’s team were denied the chance to win 17 consecutive Tests by India in 2001 and 2008. The women’s team now have a chance to enter new ground and establish a new level of dominance.
