After the Pakistan Super League and IPL, it is the turn of international cricket to get impacted by COVID-19. The three-match ODI series between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, which was to begin on May 23, has also been impacted. Reports have emerged that Sri Lanka bowling coach Chaminda Vaas, Isuru Udana and Shiran Fernando have tested positive for COVID-19. In one tweet from a Sri Lankan journalist, he said, “The bubble in Dhaka is compromised as Chaminda Vaas, Isuru Udana and Shiran Fernando test positive for COVID. The three-match series that was supposed to start today is in doubt. Team awaiting results of second PCR test.”

However, in the latest update, the second PCR test confirmed that Vaas and Udana have tested negative. Shiran Fernando, though, has tested positive. However, the series will go ahead as planned. The three-match ODI series will take place in Mirpur. The dates were 23, 25 and 27. Kusal Perera is the new captain of the Sri Lanka cricket team. Shakib Al Hasan will come back for Bangladesh. The all-rounder was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders side for IPL 2021.

Coronavirus impacts cricket again

The international cricket season resumed after a break of close to one month. When the IPL 2021 was going on, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh played in a two-Test series in Pallekele. That series was part of the ICC World Test Championship cycle. Sri Lanka won the second Test.

IPL 2021 is postponed indefinitely due to COVID-19. Several players tested positive for the coronavirus towards the end of April. Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Warrier tested positive from the Kolkata Knight Riders camp. Amit Mishra, Wriddhiman Saha and Chennai Super Kings’ staff all tested positive for coronavirus.

Sri Lanka has played only six ODIs and Twenty20 Internationals ever since Mickey Arthur took charge. However, they have played a lot more Tests. After their dismal performance in the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, Arthur took charge of the side in transition. In this series, senior players like Angelo Mathews, Dimuth Karunaratne and Dinesh Chandimal are not playing.
