Former Sri Lanka cricketer Avishka Gunawardene has been cleared of all corruption charges two years after the charges were made against him. He was cleared by an independent tribunal on May 10 and the former cricketer will now be allowed to participate in competitive cricket.

The decision, meanwhile, is still open to appeal, and a following formal, detailed announcement will be made public. Gunawardene was slapped with the following two charges on May 10, 2019.

Meanwhile, former Sri Lanka cricketer Nuwan Zoysa, who was found guilty of four corrutpion chargers two years ago, was slapped with a further six years of ban under ICC’s Anti-corruption Code.

Avishka Gunawardene was charged, on May 10, 2019, by the following Anti-Corruption codes:

Article 2.1.4 – Directly or indirectly soliciting, inducing, enticing, instructing, persuading, encouraging or intentionally facilitating any Participant to breach Code Article 2.1.

Article 2.4.5 – Failing to disclose to the ACU (without unnecessary delay) full details of any incident, fact, or matter that comes to the attention of a Participant that may evidence Corrupt Conduct under the Anti-Corruption Code by another Participant.

Meanwhile, according to Gunawardene’s lawyer, the cricketer should be compensated for the period he was banned, since he has been cleared now.

“Avishka should be compensated for a valid reason. If he has not been found guilty but suffered due to the loss of his job which he was doing for a living should be repaid,” his lawyer, Chrismal Warnasuriya, said as quoted by bdcrictime.
