Australia enters the third and final test against South Africa in Sydney on Wednesday, January 4, looking for a series sweep and a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final to finish off a strong home summer. The second test in Melbourne was another one-sided affair, with Australia defeating the Proteas by an innings and 182 runs. The South Africans had no solid answers to the Kangaroos’ questions. The highlight player for the Aussies was David Warner, who hammered a double century. Alex Carey also contributed with 111 runs. Cameron Green was the standout with the bat, taking a fifer in the first inning. However, due to an injury, he has been ruled out of the third test. Australia holds an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, but the third test is crucial in terms of the World Test Championship points table.
South Africa’s bowling has looked good, but their efforts have been overshadowed by batting. With only one Test remaining, the Proteas cannot anticipate a miracle with the bat. Elgar wants his boys to compete hard and stay in contention for the WTC final race. Dean Elgar has had a difficult few weeks. His squad needed big runs from him, but they didn’t come. He’s been caught down the leg side twice, but it’s not all bad luck – it’s definitely an area where opposition bowlers believe they can dismiss him – and the first-innings run out at the MCG was self-inflicted at a crucial moment. Although he did not have much to work with in Melbourne, some of his captaincies have come under scrutiny.
