When it comes to Indian cricket, there have been some notable contributions from Parsi cricketers. Farokh Engineer, Nari Contractor and Polly Umrigar were some of the big names who did India proud. Diana Edulji from the women’s team revolutionized cricket in the country. However, in 2018, during the Ranji Trophy match between Gujarat and Mumbai at the Wankhede stadium, one Parsi player stole the show.

Hailing from Surat, the 21-year old picked up a five-wicket haul. The left-arm pacer became a mainstay of the Gujarat Cricket team in the 2018/19 season, taking 37 wickets. In 16 matches, he has taken a total of 65 wickets at an average of 22.5. His First-Class exploits have largely gone unnoticed. But, on Friday, this individual jumped into the big league. He was chosen as one of the four standby players in the India squad for the ICC World Test Championship final and the five Tests in England. This is the story of Arzan Nagwaswalla.

Learning from his brother

Arzan Nagwaswalla is the youngest member of a Parsi community in the village of Nargal near Surat. Nagwaswalla picked the basics of the game from his elder brother, Vispi, at an early age. Known for his quiet nature, Nagwaswalla’s haul of 5/78 against Mumbai gave him tremendous recognition.

In the 2019 Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament, Gujarat were boosted by a spell of 4/15 from Nagwaswalla as he continued to impress.

His inclusion in the India side is a continuation of the upward journey. In an interview to Sportstar, he admitted that everytime he plays there is pressure. Now, on the shores of England, he may not get an opportunity at all. But, in the process of his selection, Nagwaswalla has ensured a Paris presence in Indian cricket after a long time.

He will be in England for a long time, first for the ICC World Test Championship. Then, he could be in England again for the five Tests starting from August 4 and ending on September 14.
