India Test specialist Ajinkya Rahane is known for keeping calm under pressure. His current run in the South Africa tour might not have favoured him much but a clear depiction of his grit and captaincy ability came to the fore during India’s monumental Test series win Down Under in 2021-22. The visitors suffered humiliation under Virat Kohli in the first Test but came back strongly at MCG to level the four-match series with Rahane taking on the reins and scoring a brilliant century. The victory set the course of the tour for India as they drew the third Test but won the final match in Brisbane to clinch a historic series win on Australian soil.

Rahane opened up on the series win and his effort to resurrect the sinking Indian ship after a nightmarish 36 all-out in the first Test. He said that someone else wrongly took credit for the decisions that he took on the field or in the dressing room.

“I know what I’ve done there. I don’t need to tell anyone. That’s not my nature to go and take credit. Yes, there were some things that I took the decisions on the field or in the dressing room but someone else took the credit for it,” Rahane said in an episode of ‘Backstage With Boria’.

“(What was) important for me was that we won the series. That was a historical series and for me, that was really special.”

‘I never talk much about myself or praise myself’

The Mumbai-batter further mentioned that it is not always in his nature to take credit for the decisions that he made but someone else claiming it only made him laugh. “After that, the reactions from people or those who took credit or what was said on the media, ‘I did this’ or ‘This was my decision’, or ‘This was my call’, it was for them to talk about,” Rahane said.

“From my end, I knew what decisions I took on the field and what decisions I took on my instincts.

“Yes, we talked with the management too but I used to laugh about it, that is what I did on the field, I never talk much about myself or praise myself. But what I did there, I knew,” he added.

Since the historic Test win at MCG, Rahane has played 13 Tests for India, but his form remains questionable. He has scored 479 runs at an average of 20.82, which includes two fifties. In the recently concluded South Africa tour, he could score only 136 runs from six innings at an average of 22.67.
